TREATING PsORIASIS

Finding the right regimen.

Treating psoriasis isnít a perfect science. In fact, itís common to try several approaches before finding one that works for you. Before selecting a treatment, you and your doctor will want to consider all aspects of the treatment approach, including:

  • Your age and medical history
  • Your skin type
  • Any related conditions you may have
  • Your current lifestyle
  • Your treatment expectations
  • Treatment results
  • Your response to previous therapies
  • Side effects and risks
  • Treatment cost

Existing treatment options.

Topicals

Topical treatments are those applied directly to the skin. They are usually the first option for treating mild psoriasis, and they work to slow down cell reproduction and reduce inflammation and itching.

Phototherapy

Exposing the skin to ultraviolet light has been shown to slow the growth of skin cells affected by psoriasis. Phototherapy is most successful when done regularly under medical supervision.

Systemics

Systemics are prescription medications typically given to individuals who are not responsive to topical treatments. Systemics work throughout the body and are taken orally or by injection.

Biologics

Biologic drugs are protein-based prescription medications designed to target the immune system. Taken by injection or infusion, they work to block specific cells and proteins in the immune system that are known to play a role in psoriasis.
